Welcome and initial thoughts on Chapters One & Two

Great Idea Jason! I'm excited to read this book. Mostly because i'm excited to consider some fresh perspectives on several of the issues. There are many doctrinal issues where i'm not comfortable with conventional conservative thinking. My experience has found there is little or no value in discussing these issues with most believers. There doesn't seem to be much room to consider alternative thinking in the Chruch. Stances and positions have remained largely unchanged for hundreds of years. Many of the Chruch's doctrinal stances are polarizing and I just don't believe they need to be. It's interesting to notice how carefully my pastor choices his words so as to avoid theology and doctrinal issues almost whenever possible. In my opinion, fimr stances are just not necessary for a daily walk, however, in most conservative Christian circles it is directly associated with a "deeper" walk. Stances on doctrinal issues are used to define God's character.....or place Him in a box.

After reading the first couple chapters, I think Mclaren does a great job of pointing out several historical instances where the Church realized it had to change it's position on issues. All these instances where controversial in their time, but looking back, all these shifts were necessary and in several instances long overdue. I look forward to getting into the meat of what he has to say. He's pretty clear in that he does not intent to provide "answers" only responses to inspire conversation. For all who want to join this book club....it should be fun!!
